The Ford Focus was named The Car Connection’s Best Car to Buy 2012 after being chosen by the site’s editors from amongst a field of 40 nominees using the site’s unique “meta reviews” that combine reviews by staff journalists with opinions gathered from around the Web – all presented together with a simple rating. “The 2012 Ford Focus has great looks, gas mileage and handling, plus some of the most advanced technology features in its class,” according to Marty Padgett, editorial director of High Gear Media. The Focus earned the highest rating from editors this year, topping other brand-new vehicles such as the Hyundai Veloster, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, and Chevy Sonic.
High Gear Media’s luxury and performance site, Motor Authority, awarded the 2012 Porsche 911 as its “Best Performance/Luxury Car to Buy 2012.” Motor Authority editors selected the single luxury/performance vehicle priced higher than $50,000, that appealed to enthusiasts most strongly with styling, features, acceleration and handling. “The Porsche 911 isn’t just a new 911,” said Motor Authority editor Nelson Ireson, “it’s a brilliant new sports car that just happens to have an awesome back story.” The 911 was chosen over finalists such as the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster, and the Ford Mustang Boss 302.

Let’s have a Fiesta: Ford becomes Europe’s top-selling brand in March

Ford of Europe announced that it was the No.1 automaker in Europe for the month of March with a sales volume of 192,500. Total sales volume saw a 16.1 per cent increase versus March 2009, and was Ford’s tenth consecutive month-on-month increase in sales. In terms of first-quarter sales, Ford remains Europe’s No.2 best-seller year-to-date.
Market share was at a twelve-year high of 10.4 per cent and the company’s best share in its main 19 European markets since August 1998.
“Attaining the No.1 position in the European market for March and being No.2 year-to-date – despite the continuing aggressive discounting we have seen from some competitors – is a great testament to the hard work of the Ford team and especially our dealers across Europe who have done an outstanding job in supporting and satisfying their customers,” said Ingvar Sviggum, Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe.
Ford Fiesta sales were the strongest in the lineup at 68,800, the highest for any Ford model on record in a single month in Europe.
“Fiesta continues to be an outstanding performer for us with 140,400 sold in Europe during the first three months of the year, and close to 70,000 sold in March alone,” said Roelant de Waard, Vice President, Sales, Ford of Europe. “Globally, we’ve now sold over 750,000 Fiestas since the latest generation model was launched almost 18 months ago.

Ford vehicles’ resale value up 23 percent over 2009

FoMoCo’s focus on quality is paying off as the automaker announced today that the resale value of its vehicles grew 23 percent in the past year alone, outpacing the industry average by 4 percentage points. Ford said that warranty repair rates on its vehicles have declined by an average of more than 40 percent globally in the past three years.

The Dearborn automaker said that Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles’ initial quality in the U.S. has improved for five straight year and that vehicles now have the fewest number of defects of any full-line manufacturer.

For example, on average, the redesigned 2010 Ford Taurus is selling 50 percent higher at auction than the 2009 Taurus after one year in service. Similarly, the 2010 Ford Fusion V6 was up 26 percent at auction than the 2009 model after one year in service.

“Wholesale price performance was extremely strong throughout 2009, and during this period Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products matched or exceeded the performance of the overall market,” said Tom Webb, chief economist, Manheim Consulting, the world’s largest provider of automotive remarketing services. “And, in 2010, Ford products have outperformed the overall market, especially in the increasingly important segments of compact cars, midsize cars and crossover vehicles.”

Ford open to partnerships in green technology, but will remain cautious

Speaking on the sidelines at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference, FoMoCo’s Chairman Bill Ford Jr. said on Monday that the company is open to partnerships in green technology but will be cautious in committing to any alliance.

“We are always open to it but I think we will be careful before we jump,” Bill Ford said in an interview with Reuters. “You always go into the joint venture with the premise that you will save money and save manpower, and our experience often has been that it does neither.”

Bill said that partners heading into any alliance needed to have clear agreement on the division of work and the ownership of any intellectual property created by the result of a partnership.

“I am not saying every joint venture is bad,” he said. “But you have to be very thoughtful and really have very clear expectations.”

Porsche, Lincoln take top spots in J.D. Power 2010 dependability survey

In a war that usually takes place between Porsche and Lexus, FoMoCo’s Lincoln and General Motors’ Buick have jumped in to get a piece of the action. While Porsche sits atop the annual U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study rankings released by J.D. Power and Associates today, Lexus, which ended its 14-year reign last year, fell to third, tying with Buick.

Porsche came in at No.1 with 110 points, followed by Lincoln, which came in with 114 points. Buick and Lexus tied for the third spot with 115 points. It’s important to note that Lincoln improved by six rank positions from 2009 to follow Porsche in the nameplate ranking.

“The improvements in long-term dependability and component replacement rates are good news for both consumers and manufacturers,” said David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates. “Manufacturers benefit from lower warranty expenses, while consumers incur lower maintenance and repair costs, as well as less inconvenience.”

Overall vehicle dependability has improved by 7 percent in 2010 to an average of 155 points.

New Transit Connect Graphic image wraps-Maximum Impact with your marketing message

The cost for the wraps will start as little as $100 for something simple to $3,500 for a complete Transit wraparound.

The site, www.fordtransitconnectgraphics.com, was developed by Ford’s partner in the program, Original Wraps Inc. It offers limitless options to customers so they can create just about any look for their Transit Connect; however, the site does warn against using copyrighted or obscene images.

“There may be no bigger investment a business owner makes than a first impression,” Len Deluca, director of Ford commercial vehicles, said in a statement. “This Web site provides a great way for a business owner to try out a look before making that investment.”

A New player in the Mustang Game

German tuner Geiger Cars’ boss Karl Geiger seems to be obsessed with American Cars – a rare combinations indeed. Nonetheless, Geiger’s love for American performance cars has gave many of us something to be excited about. Following the 701-hp Ford GT, 592-hp Corvette Z06, 890-hp Corvette Z06 and the 568-hp Camaro SS – Geiger is back with a modified version of the Mustang Shelby GT500.

Geiger’s engineers worked on the already powerful V8 of the Shelby GT500 but added some upgrades including a 3.3L compressor, a 1.6 bar supercharging pressure, a modified injection system, larger throttle valves, a 100 millimeter air flow meter and machined cylinder heads. All that allows for an output of 799-hp with a peak torque of 697 lb-ft.

With Toyota stopping sales for recall, is yours safe to drive?

With Toyota's stunning decision yesterday to stop sales of eight models, is it safe to drive your car?

That's something a lot of Toyota drivers should be asking themselves today. If thousands of cars , including best-sellers Corolla and Camry, can't be sold because of fears the accelerator could stick, then why is it safe to keep driving millions of cars on the road that also could become runaways?

So far, Toyota is standing pat, saying it's just fine to keep driving your Toyota -- even if under recall -- as long as it's not experiencing telltale signs that it could be susceptible to a sticking accelerator. Of course, just a couple of days ago Toyota was insisting that it was just fine to sell new cars that were subject to a recall. Look how fast that message changed:

"As part of the recall, we are obliged to suspend sales until there is a remedy ... but the advice for customers remains the same," Toyota spokesman Mike Michels tells Drive On. While Toyota's recall was voluntary, Toyota says it's following government protocols that require it to stop selling cars unless it has an immediate remedy, and it doesn't. It can't fix the part that can wear and cause unintended acceleration in all the cars right away.

If you own a Toyota that's under recall, pay careful attention to whether the accelerator pedal action seems rough or is sluggish in returning to the idle position, he says.

Only then, if you experience this, "They should not operate the vehicle anymore ," Michels says. He insists that "recalls happen all the time where owners continue to drive their cars."

But few recalls can cause a problem as sensational as ones that have killed some Toyota or Lexus drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has already shown that drivers of a runaway Toyota or Lexus may be unable to stop the car by stomping on the brake pedal, become confused in trying to shift into neutral or contend with stop-start buttons that take three seconds of continuous pushing to shut off.

Toyota had already ordered drivers of many models to remove floor mats that could jam under accelerator pedals. The latest problem reversed Toyota's previous denials that accelerator pedals could jam open on their own, and a permanent fix could be a long time in coming.

Ford's next Explorer will get better gas mileage

Ford is going ahead with a new version of what was once one of its highest-flying models, the Explorer. The well-known SUV will become a crossover that gets at least 25% better gas mileage than the stagnant model it replaces, Cars.com's Kicking Tires blog is reporting.

Ford will hire or transfer 1,200 workers to its Chicago plant to help assemble the new unibody Explorer, effectively doubling the employees there. The cars currently built there — the Taurus and Lincoln MKS — combined for more than 60,000 sales in 2009 to the current Explorer's 52,190, and Ford clearly expects headier days for its once-iconic SUV.

Ford has been retooling the plant — part of a $180 million investment in both the Chicago Assembly Plant and Ford's Chicago Heights, Ill., stamping plant — for some time to accommodate the new Explorer, which goes on sale the fourth quarter of this year.

Ford spokesman Jay Ward wouldn't confirm or deny most of the details, except to reiterate that the Explorer will move to a unibody platform and offer significantly better gas mileage than before.

The new Explorer will share its platform with the Taurus and MKS, but it will offer a turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, a source tells Cars.com. Ford will also offer the "big V-6" from the Taurus and MKS, according to a source.

Toyota says it is halting the production and sale of eight recalled models – including its three most popular vehicles in Canada – so it can catch up to accelerator pedal repairs.
The auto giant revealed late Tuesday that it had instructed dealers across the country to halt sales of models already part of a wider recall of 270,000 vehicles that the company announced last week to resolve possible problems with sticking accelerator pedals.

"We are stopping sales and production so we can meet the needs of current Toyota owners of these affected models," Toyota Canada Inc. spokeswoman Sandy DiFelice said.

The company said it needs the accelerator pedals that it normally would use on the assembly line to meet the demand for repairs on cars in the recall list, including the Corolla compact, RAV4 sport utility, Matrix crossover, Avalon and Camry cars, Highlander and Sequoia sport utes and the Tundra truck.

As a result, Toyota will idle output of the Corolla and Matrix in Cambridge and the RAV4 sport utility vehicle in nearby Woodstock during the week of Feb. 1

The company did not indicate when it would renew sales of the affected models.

Toyota's announcement is the latest to dent the company's stellar reputation in the industry for quality and durability built over the past two decades.

A Toyota official could not confirm if the production stoppage would lead to any worker layoffs or if the company would employ them in other duties during that week.

The Cambridge plant employs about 4,000 workers who also build Lexus RX350 crossovers in addition to the Corolla and Matrix.

The Woodstock operation has a workforce of 1,000 but is scheduled to expand to about 1,800 in March.

The Corolla is the second-best selling car in Canada while the RAV4 and the Matrix are second and third in sales for the company.

Toyota also halted sales of the eight models in the United States and curbed production at assembly plants in Kentucky, Indiana and Texas.

In a statement, Toyota disclosed that it had investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in some models without the presence of floor mats.

"There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partly depressed position or return slowly to the idle position," the company added.

The company announced the 270,000-vehicle recall last week, affecting various model years in Canada and the United States. The recall south of the border involves 2.3 million vehicles.

Late last year, the company sent letters to owners of 209,000 cars and trucks so it could make changes to avoid any chance of runaway acceleration.

It started the "safety improvement campaign'' for various Toyota and Lexus models after a probe by Transport Canada.

It came after Toyota posted an "alert" on its website in September that asked customers to remove driver's side floor mats from seven models until the company found remedies because of the possibility they could cause accelerators to get stuck.

In the U.S., Toyota recalled 4.2 million vehicles last November in response to concerns about the pedals becoming stuck because of floor mats.

"The sticking accelerator pedal recall is separate from the ongoing campaigns involving certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles to reduce the risk of pedal entrapment by incorrect or out of place accessory floor mats," the company noted in its statement Tuesday.

"The safety of customers and restoring confidence in Toyota vehicles is our first priority."

The pedal recall and sales suspensions affect the 2009-2010 RAV4 models, 2009-2010 Corollas, 2009-2010 Matrixes, 2005-2010 Avalons, 2007-2010 Camrys, 2010 Highlanders, 2007-2010 Tundras and 2008-2010 Sequoias.

Ford has a long history of supporting and helping members of the military and their families. The company also dedicated its most recent Ford Accelerated Action Day exclusively to this group of people, addressing their urgent needs.

This was the fourth Accelerated Action Day of 2009. The previous three focused on addressed the needs of children and families, the environment and community building projects. The final Ford Accelerated Action Day of the year is December 4 when Ford will help feed the hungry under the theme of Giving and Sharing.

Ford encourages salaried employees to take two work days per year and volunteer in their local area. Last year, more than 20,000 Ford employees and retirees performed 100,000 hours of work on community projects – the equivalent of $2 million of in-kind corporate contributions.

Teams of Ford volunteers painted, made repairs and brightened the lives of people at veterans facilities in southeast Michigan and Washington, D.C.

“The men and women of the armed forces defend our freedom each and every day, a gift we do not take lightly,” said Janet Lawson, director, Ford Volunteer Corps. “We want to thank our veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice, but more than that, our volunteers want to give something back to those who have given so much for us.”

Ford announced today that its new 2010 Ford Taurus will be the official vehicle of the 2010 International CES show that will be held on Jan. 7-10 in Las Vegas.’
“The all-new Taurus is Ford’s technology flagship, offering more user-friendly technology to help keep you safe and connected than cars twice its price,” said Frank Davis, executive director Product Development. “And there’s no better venue to show it off than CES.”

Ford Fusion moves into America’s Top 10 selling vehicles’ list

Ford Motor Co. announced today that the Ford Fusion sedan has entered into the list of America’s Top 10 selling vehicles and has become the No. 1 selling domestic car. So far in 2009, Ford has sold 151,137 units, passing the previous Fusion full-year sales high of 149,552 in 2007.
“It’s extraordinary that a car could set a sales record in an environment where overall industry sales are down 26 percent from a year ago,” Ford sales analyst George Pipas said.
Ford said that sales of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid account for almost 20 percent of total Fusion sedan sales. It said that 60 percent of Fusion Hybrid sales have been made to customers coming from import brands – mostly Honda and Toyota.
